The number one thing people will think about when planning their wedding festivities on a budget is what corners they can cut. There are just about endless ways to save money, some being more drastic than others. Here are the big-ticket items that you could save money on for your wedding

Save money on the venue

One of the biggest ways you can save money on your wedding is finding a cheaper venue. You can be pretty creative with the wedding venues you choose; beaches, gardens, even graveyards are all common examples of cheap non-traditional venues.

If you still want to have a big venue

You can compromise on the date of the wedding. The most popular (and expensive) days to have your wedding on will be weekends with beautiful weather. You can often find much better deals with large wedding venues if you choose an off-season weekday to have your wedding on.

Smaller Guest list

More guests, more expenditure; it's as simple as that. With a large guest list, you will not only need a large venue, but food, drink, and wedding favors for each guest. We aren’t saying reduce your wedding to only 25 people, but reducing the number of guests is a surefire way to save more.

DIY Wedding Favors

Giving away wedding favors to each of your guests can be costly; still, it can be unusual to completely ditch the concept. To save money, consider doing DIY favors. Home cooking, handmade items, or other low-cost favors can save you even a few dollars on each guest. If doing it yourself saves you only 4 dollars a favor and you have 200 guests, you just saved $800 dollars. 

Less Fancy Food (and drink)

Your food budget should absolutely be looked at closely when planning for your wedding, because there are a lot of ways to save. Instead of plated dinners, consider buffet-style serving. Instead of lots of high-end appetizers, stick with a few fancy ones, and have more common ones in bulk. Will your venue have a bar? Do you need to have that fancy champagne? Ask yourselves all these questions and really examine what costs can be saved.

Even though there is lots to be saved, you probably still want your wedding catered; we recommend against DIY dinner in most scenarios. If nothing else, because of the stress and challenges of preparing food for large groups of people. You can still get your wedding catered on a budget, without the headaches of food prep.

Cut the Cake!

You probably don’t want to entirely cut the cake budget, but you still don’t need to get a beautiful tiered wedding cake that you see in movies and TV. While cutting the cake makes for a nice photo, it is definitely not necessary to have in your wedding reception. 

I’ve been to weddings with only cupcakes before, and honestly, that can even be preferable to trying to serve out a massive cake. 

Ask for Help

Now that you’ve thought about cutting corners, you can think about asking for help. Oftentimes parents or family members may be asked to chip in financially for the wedding, and that can help save you a ton of money. 

Expand your mind further, though: family members, friends, and your wedding party will often be more than willing to help contribute in non-financial ways. Maybe you ask your artistic cousin to design some wedding decorations, or maybe you rely on your grandma to bake cookies for party favors. People are willing to help out in ways that are more than just giving you a check. 

This can cause some logistical issues that could be stressful, but it can save you substantially.

Wedding Insurance

Many insurance companies will have specific packages for events or weddings. These packages usually don’t cost too much and can provide you with thousands to millions of dollars of coverage. Things you can often cover are

• Damage to the venue

• Injuries to your guests

• Alcohol-related events

• Cancellations due to weather, illness, venue closure, no-show vendors, or more

• Change of Heart Coverage (which we hope you never need)

Depending on the policy, you may even be able to insure wedding gifts, attire, and even the ring against theft or damage! 

While wedding insurance doesn’t directly save you money, it can cost you dearly if something goes wrong and you don’t have it.
