Guide to A Good Stag (Or Stag & Doe) Raffle Prize
Today’s blog is going to be for the groomsmen, friends, and family of the groom. If you’ve never been a part of a Stag party before, we highly recommend you check out our blog on What A Stag Party Is, but if you’re on the hunt for a good idea for a raffle gift for a stag, you’re in the right place.
Here in Buffalo, New York, it’s very common for men who are planning their wedding to hold what’s known as a stag party, or stag raiser. This is usually part bachelor party, and part fundraiser. The goal is, the guys involved in the wedding come up with creative ways to raise money for the groom to help cover the cost of the wedding. (Couldn’t we all use a little help?)
There is another alternative, where the Groom & Bride both get involved, along with their team, which is commonly referred to as the “Stag & Doe Party,” or a “Jack & Jill” party. The goal.. Get that wedding bill down! Are you ready to achieve your mission?
Whatever version of a wedding fundraiser you plan to have, just guys, or guys and gals, today we’re going to go over what makes a good Stag Raffle Prize.
Cost to Walk In (& for Beer & Food)
Typically, the event ticket cost will generate your initial revenue, covering food and probably an open bar at the establishment where you hold the stag party.
You need to make money on the event though, so if you consider what the bar or venue charges, say,$15-$20 (or more) per head for food and/or beer & liquor, then you need to charge more than that to make money on the initial tickets. The goal is usually to sell as many tickets to this event as you can, to create the most revenue. This is where a more private, invite-only bachelor party or bachelorette party.
Once the guests are in the door, you’ve made a bit back on your budget already, but this is just where the fun begins. The more fun and entertaining the party, the more likely the guests are to drop some more money, and increase your revenue. You probably want to consider a door prize that everyone automatically gets one entry into. This is usually a bigger prize, which can be used on the tickets/invite to generate interest in attendance.
This is where raffle or auction tickets can significantly increase the likelihood of you and the groom/bride making more money.
The Stag Auction / Raffle
One big aspect of how we do stags here in Buffalo is a version of the silent auction, or as your dad may have called it, the Chinese auction. This is where individuals pay for tickets, and stag-goers can win a collection of juicy prizes if their ticket is chosen. If the guest truly wants to win a prize, then they can enter as many tickets into the bag as they want to increase their odds of winning. An alternative method is the silent auction, where guests write down how much they're willing to spend on a raffle prize.

This is one aspect of the stag that aims to get other friends and family to show up. The better the prizes, or even the expectation of the prizes, the more likely you’ll get a few extra guys to buy a ticket to the event.
What Makes a Good Stag Prize?
Well, to put it simply, whatever is going to generate people to buy more tickets will help, so any prize that makes people want to win is a good prize. Of course, it’s not that simple! You can think about items like jerseys, memorabilia, and gift certificates, for example. These are things that will create interest and draw attention. But where do they come from? Well, they come from whoever’s holding the party. That means the groomsmen in a stag party, and the groomsmen and bridesmaids in a Stag & Doe Party.

We understand what makes a good stag prize!
Ok, so for the Groomsmen out there..a good stag prize is..
-
Fun - It’s gotta be something that people find interesting, so they spend money trying to win it!
-
Affordable - You don’t need to bring a signed Wayne Gretzky rookie card.. But also, you don’t want to bring a 6-pack of Natty Daddy’s either. Somewhere around $25-$100 should do it
-
Easy to access - If you’re planning on buying something off the internet, buy it early so you’re not telling everyone you had the best idea but it came from China…
-
Creative - the more conversation around the idea of your prize, the better. No one knows what it means, but it’s provocative!
-
Thoughtful - The more thought you put into it, the more meaning it will have, and the more people will find it interesting.
